High Oil Level
We just purchased a 2005 Sprinter Van 2500 Diesel with 33000 miles on it.
When we drove it to our shop (100 mile trip) it would indicate that the oil level was high shortly after stopping then getting back on the freeway, then after a few miles the indicator would shut off. The guy we bought it from told us about this problem. When we got the van to the shop we checked the oil and it was about 1 quart low. Yesterday we had the oil changed and the mechanic said he had to put 12 quarts in before the dipstick showed the correct level, and of course the high oil light is back on. I don't drive it now so I am not sure if the light eventually goes off or not. I will have to ask the driver. What's going on with this van?? Isn't 12 quarts a little too much?

If all is stock, the oil capacity at full is 9.5 qts. A dipstick with a yellow handle means the level should be checked when cold. One with a red handle means it should be checked hot (after letting stand for ~5 min.). Level is sensitive to the attitude of the van, so find a nearly level surface to park on before checking. Someone may have modified the oil system, so check to make sure it's stock. Running with 2.5 qts too much oil may damage the engine, etc.
