Our Cam shaft pulley fell off going down the road
We were going about 30 mph & the cam shaft pulley just fell out under the truck for no apparent reason. 1000 miles from home almost to the pick-up. Has anyone else had this problem? Our van is a 2005, 109,000 miles, 2500 model.

Yes, I have seen this several times now. The bolt for the harmonic ballancer breaks and the ballancer falls off usually taking a few components with it. 99% of the time you can extract the bolt, make a ne key way for the crank and bolt on new parts. I have also seen the outer ring of the ballancer sepparate from the inner ring. Those dont do as much damage.

Do you think there's any chance Daimler Chrysler would cover this? We are out of warranty, but it seems to me like this should not be happening on a 1-yr old van. Maybe they need to do a recall. This could have been even worse if we'd been on the freeway. Cost us over $2000.

You might have been able to get some assistance from DC if you serviced your vehicle at the dealer regularly. But most dealers arent going to go out of their way to help someone that hasnt spent any money with them.

We are running over 70 Sprinters. We have had 6 Crankshaft pulley failures. The last one took out the crankshaft = New Engine. Not a happy camper.

Are you guys running 2 compressors by any chance? Seen problems with people installing aftermarket compressors for rear a/c units. The aftermarket ones a junk and puts too much strain on the system, hence breaking the crank shaft, etc.

Mine fell off at 80k miles. However when it fell of, it chewed the end of the crank all up. So the dealer just put a crank in it. At 110,000k the crank split in half. So the dealer tell me that the crank only should never have been put in. It is sort of a match set type of thing. So DC paid for a new engine. $10g
Totally lucked out,

aux AC pulley and crankshaft problems
We also have had problems with auxiliary AC belt and pulley failure twice resulting in engine destruction (once due to related crankshaft failure).and three times resulting simply in thrown v-belt. I can be reached at davidmayfield@msn.com and could use any help/advice on how to fix. Also would like contact info for others suffering from same plight... our's is a Daimler Commercial Bus NA 2006 model
