door speakers for sprinter?
The doors seem too shallow to mount speakers flush. Right under the door handle would be a perfect place. Anyone ever mount a shallow box speaker there before?

no i have not. you might run into a problem with the wiring. if you want better sound from the currrent speakers located on each end of the dash, you might want to change the speakers. i changed them with ones that have a tweeter built in and i also upgraded with an after market radio. i now have much better sound range.

re: speakers
Thanks Falcon. How difficult is it to remove the factory radio?

NOT DIFFICULT AT ALL. YOU WILL NEED THE 2 UNLOCK TOOLS THAT YOU PROBABLY CAN BORROW FROM YOUR LOCAL RADIO SHOP. I THINK THEY VW UNLOCKS WILL WORK. THEY JUST SLIDE IN ON THE SIDES OF THE RADIO AND RELEASE THE ANTI-THEFT CLIPS. AFTER THE CLIPS ARE RELEASED, YOU JUST SLIDE THE RADIO OUT. ALL OF THE WIRES UNPLUG FROM BACK OF RADIO.

NO I DON'T BUT I AM GOING TO TRY. MY WIFE & I ARE MODIFYING A NEW 2006 DODGE 2500 158WB SPRINTER CARGO VAN TO ACCOMODATE MY SON THAT IS CONFINED TO A WHEEL CHAIR. WE HAVE ADDED A REAR HVAC UNIT TO SUPPLEMENT THE FACTORY CAB UNIT AND WILL BE ADDING A BRAUN WHEELCHAIR LIFT IN THE REAR ALONG WITH A SPRINTER INTERIOR PACKAGE WHICH INCLUDES CEILING PANELS TO MATCH EXISTING CAB SECTION, WINDOW TRIM & LOWER SIDE PANELS. I CHANGED OUT TO FACTORY RADIO/CD PLAYER WITH A AM/FM/CD/DVD/MP3 SYSTEM ALONG WITH 8 6" SPEAKERS, AN AMP AND SUB WOOFER. ALSO ADDING 15" PULL DOWN DVD MONITOR AND A 6 DISC CD/DVD CHANGER. WE WILL ALSO BE ADDING 4 LEATHER RECLINING SEATS IN THE REAR AND HAD THE DRIVER & PASSENGER SEATS COVERED TO MATCH WITH HEAT. WITH LONG WHEELBASE THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF ROOM IN REAR FOR ROBBIE AND HIS WHEELCHAIR. I AM TAKING DIGITALS AS THE PROCESS ADVANCES AND WILL TRY TO POST THE PICS WHEN I AM DONE. ALSO THINKING ABOUT REPLACING FRONT BUMPER WITH NEW FIBERGLASS ONE WHICH WILL BE A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE GROUND AND WILL ACCOMODATE 4 " FOG LIGHTS. I WILL ALSO BE ADDING BOXES TO COVER WHEEL WELLS AND WILL HAVE STORGAGE IN THEM. I WILL ALSO BE BUILDING SOME OVERHEAD CABINETS IN REAR OF VAN. SORRY FOR BEING SO LONG WINDED BUT WE ARE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS PROJECT WHICH WE CAN TRANSPORT ROBBIE TO DR APPTS AND SUCH.

door speakers
There are lot's of links that describe how to deal with the low-grade OEM 4" in-dash speakers.
I upgraded my Becker Sound 30 with a couple of door-mounted 6.5" Pioneer TS-G1641R 2-way speakers & 4" Blaupunkt PCxb402 2-way speakers replacing the OEM dash speakers. I also installed a dash mounted jack to connect iPod or mp3 player to play through the AUX channel of the Becker unit.
Photos are posted to the Yahoo group site listed below.
The Sound 30 now delivers much better sound for not too much $$.
My info came from multiple sources: check 'em out at these links:

Getting better sound is possible. It just depends how much one is willing to spend or tinker with....

re: door speakers
Incredible job mbcruiser ,
Where did you get the contoured boxes for the door speakers? They look great! Also, did you have to order a harness to wire in the additional speakers?

Steve,
The pods were "custom" fabrications by local car stereo place using MDF (medium-density fiberboard) covered with heavy grade vinyl. The local shop was the 4th place I went to and others were not too enthusiastic to make them, but these guys did the fabrication, wiring, speaker mounting, & install out the door in about 2 hours. And for less than $200 (total job).
The pods were secured to the plastic door panel, and the speakers were mounted to the pods. That way, the speakers can be easily serviced without taking out the door panel apart, should it ever become necessary.
Re: wiring for speakers, I believe they had to change out the Becker wiring harness to accommodate the door speakers (though the Becker unit is set up for 4 speakers via the FADER control).
The tech did say something about the harness adapter being a Mercedes or VW type, apparently commonly known by techs who know what they're doing - something I'm not sure the 1st three places I went to were).
Hope this helps.
