Default sprinter 3500 - can I run outer wheels only?

I have a Sprinter 3500 with a dual rear wheel and no longer carry heavy items. Can I remove the inner wheels and just run on the outer rear tires/rims without damage or safety concerns?

The reason you have dual wheels on the rear axle is to double the load capacity on the rear axle. I've seen guys run a dual wheel axle with just the inners. As long as you know you won't exceed the capacity of the rear wheels it's ok. You want to run the outers. Probably because the lug holes are tapered in that direction. I suppose you can do that technically but a state police officer might not like what he sees and will right you up for it.
